Paul Howe Master Sergeant (MSG) Paul Howe was an Army Delta operator who served in Somalia in 1993. William Fichtner's character "Jeff Sanderson" in the movie Black Hawk Down was modeled after him. He served with the United States Army for approximately twenty years, ten of which were spent within the special operations community. He entered training for Delta in the mid-1980s and was a member of the Delta squadron that was deployed to Somalia as part of Task Force Ranger in August 1993. Triple Canopy is a U.S. private military company (PMC) based in Herndon, Virginia. Its marquee client was the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, which it began serving in September 2003; it has also provided security services to the US Department of Energy, and training services to various foreign governments and domestic law enforcement agencies, and was one of three PMCs chosen to provide supplemental security personnel at U.S. embassies worldwide. The name Triple Canopy is presumably a reference to the "triple canopy of death", a nickname for a special forces soldier's three tabs on his left shoulder: Special Forces, Ranger, and Airborne. Triple Canopy is a member of the Private Security Company Association of Iraq. Security Contractor Cleared in Two Firings Triple Canopy fired two employees who reported seeing their supervisor, Jacob Washbourne, randomly shoot into two Iraqi civilian vehicles in Baghdad in 2006, because they had waited two days to inform the firm. A Fairfax County jury ruled on August 1, 2007 that the firm was correct in firing former US Marine Shane B. Schmidt and former US Army Ranger Charles L. Sheppard III. On the other hand, the jury forewoman, Lea C. Overby, wrote that "Although we find for [Triple Canopy], we strongly feel that [Triple Canopy]'s poor conduct, lack of standard reporting procedures, bad investigation methods and unfair double standards amongst employees should not be condoned." Overby further wrote that the jury instructions from Fairfax Circuit Court Judge Jonathan C. Thacher forced the jury to rule against Schmidt and Sheppard, but emphasized that the jury did not "agree with Triple Canopy's treatment of the plaintiffs."
